Aung San Suu Kyi

The ties that bind – the daughter of Burma
(For Aung San Suu Kyi)

Confined only by the letter,
millions breathe your spirit every day.
Flying free in the shadow of the gun,
keeper, mother, leader of a people you are.
But extra-ordinary leader of peoples,
how much woman do you have left?

Family or Country, Freedom or Persecution,
those were your choices, those were your choices!
How much of yourself, how much of your soul
has redefined sacrifice?
An entire nation chants democracy
but for freedom oh freedom, you are our hope.

So in the dark moments, in the early hours,
who is your comfort, who is your rock?
So much to learn from your resilience,
so in awe of your strength,
You are the absolute, the unshakable,
you are the legend of my lifetime.

Family or Country, Freedom or Persecution,
those were your choices, those were your choices!
How much of yourself, how much of your soul
has redefined sacrifice?
An entire nation chants democracy
but for freedom oh freedom, you are our hope.

Writer’s note: I have loved and respected Ms. Suu Kyi my entire life. I first read about her when I was only ten years old. In my mid-teens, as I started becoming a young woman, I understood more about the immense sacrifices that she had made. I wrote this poem then. Today, as her party claims victory in the by-elections, it seemed like the most auspicious time to share it with the world.
